Archery term
Release Aid
What does Release Aid mean?
A release aid is a mechanical device that holds and releases a compound-bow string or D-loop. Wrist-strap and handheld models use different trigger or rotation mechanisms. Many recurve archers release the string with their fingers instead. Learn the exact release’s safe operation before drawing a bow.

Why it matters
Pick a release that fits the bow’s D-loop and the archer’s hand, then learn its safety and trigger operation under a coach’s supervision. Keep the release pointed downrange when attached and loaded. A release aid is not a substitute for checking the bow or following range commands.
What to check
- Choose between wrist-strap and handheld styles based on fit and the model’s trigger method.
- Check the exact release’s safe operation with a coach before drawing.
- Keep the bow pointed downrange and follow the maker’s instructions.
