Archery term

Draw Weight

What does Draw Weight mean?

Draw weight is the force needed to draw a bow, stated in pounds. Recurve and traditional bow weight is commonly specified at a stated draw length, often 28 inches; it rises as the bow is drawn farther. A compound's draw weight is the peak force reached during its draw cycle, before let-off reduces the holding force.

Why it matters

The printed rating does not tell you exactly how a bow will feel at your draw length. Start with a weight you can draw smoothly and repeat without straining; build form before increasing it. A bow technician can measure actual weight and help match it to the manufacturer's limits and a safe arrow setup.

What to check

  • Compare weight at your measured draw length and the maker’s stated convention.
  • Recurve marked weight and compound peak weight describe different measurements.
  • Choose a weight you can draw and control through the full shot.
