Archery term

Draw Length

What does Draw Length mean?

Draw length is a bow measurement at full draw, not arrow length. Under the AMO convention, measure from the bottom of the nock groove to the bow-grip pivot point and add 1¾ inches. It helps fit a bow and select compatible arrows; check an archer’s form in person.

Why it matters

A bow set too long can pull the archer out of alignment; one set too short can crowd the anchor and change the shot. A wingspan estimate is only a starting point. Have a qualified bow technician measure you at full draw, then use the correct arrow-length and spine chart for your bow and shaft.

What to check

  • Have a bow technician measure your draw at full extension; a wingspan estimate is only a starting point.
  • Check the bow’s adjustment range and match arrow length to that setup.
  • Use the shaft maker’s spine chart for the finished setup.
