Archery term
Arrow Shaft
What does Arrow Shaft mean?
The arrow shaft is the long tube or rod that forms the arrow’s body. It may be made from carbon, aluminum, wood, or a combination. Points, inserts, fletching, and a nock complete the arrow. Choose a shaft by its maker’s spine chart, length, and component fit for the bow.

Why it matters
Shaft selection includes spine, length, diameter, mass, and material. Use the manufacturer’s chart for the exact model and intended bow. Do not judge compatibility from shaft diameter alone, and have a damaged shaft inspected or discarded before shooting.
What to check
- Use the shaft maker’s chart for bow type, measured draw weight, cut length, and point mass.
- Compare material, spine, diameter, GPI, and compatible component standards.
- Inspect each shaft for damage before shooting.
