Archery term

Arrow Diameter

What does Arrow Diameter mean?

Arrow diameter is the outside width of the shaft, usually measured across the tube. It is a physical size, commonly given in inches or millimeters. Spine describes stiffness, so a shaft’s diameter alone does not tell you whether it is the right stiffness for a bow.

Why it matters

Check diameter when selecting components such as nocks, inserts, points, wraps, or a rest, and check the shaft chart separately for spine. Two shafts can share a diameter and have different wall thickness, material, weight, and spine. Match each component to the specific shaft model.

What to check

  • Check the shaft’s outside and inside diameters against the exact component specifications.
  • Match nock, insert, and point to the shaft model.
  • Diameter does not tell you the arrow’s spine.
