Sight setup for a Total Archery Challenge course

For a Total Archery Challenge (TAC) distance setup, a slider is one option to compare. Choose a model you can mount and operate. Follow the exact sight and rangefinder manuals, select tape with the method published for that sight, and verify each setting at known distances with your arrows. Practice those settings and readings before the event.

Choose a movable slider for your setup

Choose by the aiming picture you prefer, the mount your bow accepts, adjustment range, scope and pin layout. A one-pin scope keeps other aiming references out of view; multiple pins show several references at once. With either layout, verify the correct mark for the distance before release. Compare the Axcel Driver, UltraView UV Slider and Slider 2, HHA Optimizer Lite X, Spot-Hogg Fast Eddie XL and Black Gold Pro Hunter HD below, then test the exact setup with your arrows.

Compare one-pin and movable multi-pin sliders

Point Blank lists the Axcel Driver Plus one-pin AVX-31 and the Axcel Driver with three-pin AccuStat II as distinct movable setups. UltraView lists the UV Slider 2 in Vertical 1 Pin, Vertical 3 Pin, Horizontal 3 Pin and Horizontal 5 Pin configurations. An earlier UV Slider/UV3XL procedure describes a horizontal 3-pin cartridge. That procedure is not a Slider 2 configuration guide. The HHA Optimizer Lite X comes in multiple pin configurations; the Point Blank 5519 .019 RH is one exact listing. Spot-Hogg distinguishes the Fast Eddie XL single-pin from its Fast Eddie XL double-pin model. Point Blank lists a separate Fast Eddie XL double-pin .010 RH. The Black Gold Pro Hunter HD is a movable sight with three- or five-pin heads. These examples link to Point Blank and manufacturer pages; check the instructions from each manufacturer for the exact model and bow fit.

A single pin leaves one aiming reference and requires dialing the yardage. Multiple pins keep more references in view but add visual clutter, and each mark still needs a verified distance. Check the instructions for the exact head, mount and adjustment range before choosing. For mounting and fit questions, see the archery sight guide.

Select and verify sight tape

Use the tape method for the exact sight. Record the bow and complete arrow setup, follow the calibration steps for that sight, and verify each setting at known distances. A chronograph reading may supply an input when the method for that sight calls for arrow speed, but it does not verify every tape mark.

The Archery Sarasota TAC setup page covers bow and spine tuning, Labradar-measured speed paired with a rangefinder for sight tapes, long-range 3D practice and ranging, angle compensation with third-axis leveling, and shot process.

Check rangefinder mode and distance display

Rangefinders are allowed on any part of the TAC shoot, including competitions[1]. A rangefinder may display line-of-sight distance, angle-compensated horizontal distance, or both, depending on its model and selected mode. Read the manual for that unit and match your sight-tape convention to the distance value you use.

Stock counts and prices reflect the catalog data used when this page was built. They can change. Check each product listing for current details.

Third-axis leveling

During setup, follow the third-axis procedure for your sight and confirm the level reference on a suitable range. A sight can appear level on flat ground while its scope is not square to the bow through an angled shot. The Spot-Hogg FAQ describes checking the Hogg-It at full draw; use the instructions for your own sight model.

Confirm distances and shot settings

Use a suitable target and backstop at a range that permits your practice. Confirm distance before shooting, stay within marks you have verified and follow range rules. Do not release an arrow at an unknown target to learn its distance.

Questions

How do I confirm distances on a multi-pin slider?

Follow the instructions for that exact sight when you assign a distance to each reference. Verify every reference with the finished bow and arrows at known distances. If those instructions include dialing between the fixed references, practice each intermediate distance with the same finished setup before the event.
