How to Tune a Drop-Away Rest

Set centershot and height, time the drop cord so the launcher clears the fletching, then confirm with a powder and paper test. Full sequence inside.

Steps

  1. Set rough centershot

    Adjust the rest horizontally so the arrow shaft lines up with the bowstring when viewed from directly behind. A bow square or laser centershot tool makes this faster, but sighting down the string by eye is a workable starting point. You will refine the position during paper tuning.

  2. Set rest height

    Move the launcher arm up or down until the arrow sits at the correct nocking point height. Level or very slightly nose-down is the target. Check your bow manufacturer's specs for the recommended starting nock height, since that number varies by model.

  3. Attach the timing cord

    Run the activation cord from the rest to the down cable or lower limb, whichever the rest requires. The cord holds the launcher up while you draw, then lets it fall as the cable travels through the shot. Make sure the cord stays clear of the riser and cables at every point in the draw cycle.

  4. Time the drop

    Draw slowly and watch when the launcher begins to move. The launcher should be fully clear before the fletching arrives, but it should not drop so early that the arrow loses support during acceleration. Adjust cord length until the timing is right. This step takes patience: small adjustments and repeat draws.

  5. Test for fletching clearance with powder

    Coat the fletches and the launcher arm lightly with foot powder or fletching contact powder. Shoot one arrow at close range. Check both surfaces for transfer marks. A mark anywhere means contact is happening. Adjust cord timing or rest position, and if the issue keeps returning, take a look at arrow spine before moving on.

  6. Listen for contact

    Shoot a few more arrows and pay attention to the sound. A tick or slap at the shot means something is still touching, the launcher, the cable guard, or both. Apply powder again and track down where.

  7. Paper tune for final alignment

    Hang paper at close range and shoot through it. A clean bullet hole means the arrow is flying straight. A torn tear, tail-high, tail-low, or sideways, points to a nocking point or centershot problem. Change one variable at a time and reshoot.   8. Bare-shaft verify (optional but recommended)

    Shoot a fletched arrow and a bare shaft at twenty yards. If they hit the same spot, the tune is solid. Separation means a nocking point or centershot error is still present. Adjust in small steps and retest.

Drop-away rests produce very clean arrow flight on a compound bow, but only when the timing works. A launcher that falls late clips the fletching, and one that falls too early lets the arrow lose support before it clears.
