Once you do buy one, use it to weigh complete arrows from tip to nock, individual points or broadheads, and replacement components. The goal is consistency across your dozen, not just matching the manufacturer’s published weight.
The bow press question
A bow press is not a beginner tool. It is also not a tool for the occasional shooter who strings their bow up in spring and puts it away in fall. The risk is real: the wrong press on the wrong cam geometry damages cables, cams, and limbs in ways that are expensive to repair. Even the right press, used without understanding of the specific bow’s geometry, causes problems.
The tasks that require a press, changing draw length, replacing a string or cable, setting a peep, installing a new module, come up a few times a year at most. A staffed pro shop with a press and a technician who has used it on hundreds of bows handles those jobs faster, more safely, and for a reasonable service fee. That is simply where the tool investment makes sense.
If you are a serious competitor, an avid hunter who shoots year-round, and you are committed to learning your bow’s specific requirements before ever setting a press on it, the math can justify the purchase. For everyone else, the pro shop is the better call.
Matching your tool kit to how much you tune
Think about how often you actually make changes. If you set your bow up in the fall and shoot it without adjustments until the following season, a bow square, a level, and a set of allen wrenches cover everything you realistically need.
