How to Choose an Arrow Rest
The arrow rest you need depends on your shooting style, bow type, and how much tuning you want to do. Here's how to decide without overbuying.

- Shooting discipline and bow type
- Arrow rests are not universal. A full-capture rest designed for a hunting compound can interfere with traditional shooting entirely, and a blade rest built for a recurve is going to be useless on a cammed compound. Before anything else, know whether you are shooting a compound or a recurve/longbow, and whether the context is target, 3D, or hunting. Those three facts alone eliminate most of the wrong choices.

- Drop-away rests fold completely out of the arrow's path at the shot, which gives fletching unrestricted clearance. Full-capture rests cradle the arrow on three sides so it cannot fall off during a hunt or a rough field carry. Blade rests (including simple launcher arms) contact the arrow minimally and work well for recurve archers and traditional setups. Each design solves a different problem, so the right one depends on what problem you actually have.

- If your fletching contacts the rest at the shot, the arrow leaves inconsistently, and you will see it in your groups before you figure out why. Drop-aways nearly eliminate this concern because the rest is moving away before the fletching arrives. Fixed-position rests require careful tuning of arrow spine and rest height to achieve clearance. Helical fletchings are the hardest to clear on a fixed rest; if you're running a tight helical, a drop-away is worth the cost.

- When you are climbing a treestand, crawling through brush, or drawing quietly with an elk inside thirty yards, you cannot afford to have an arrow fall off the rest. Full-capture designs exist specifically for this situation. They hold the arrow regardless of angle or sudden movement. The trade-off is that the containment material contacts the arrow more, which demands careful tuning to avoid fletching interference. For target shooting at a known range, this trade-off is rarely worth it.
- Timing and activation on drop-aways
- A drop-away rest must fall completely out of the way before the fletching passes it. Rests activate either from a cord tied to the downward-moving cable (cord-driven) or from a limb-driven connection. Getting the timing right matters. Too slow and you still get contact; too fast and the arrow can bounce on the fall. This is not a set-it-and-forget-it install for most archers. Plan to spend time at the range confirming the fall with paper or bare-shaft testing.
- Micro-adjustment and tunability
- A rest you cannot move precisely will cost you more time at the tuning bench than it saves anywhere else. Look for tool-free or micro-click adjustments in both elevation and windage. This becomes critical when you change arrow weights seasonally or switch between broadheads and field points, which almost never impact identically. The more precisely you can move the rest, the faster you can get back to center.
The short answer
Match the rest to your bow type, your shooting context, and how much fletching clearance your arrow setup needs. A compound hunter in heavy brush needs something different from a competitive target archer, and both of them need something different from a recurve shooter. The rest does not improve your shot — it just gets out of the way of it. Choosing one is mostly about not choosing wrong.
Drop-away, full-capture, or blade: which category to start in
Start here before you look at anything else.
A drop-away rest (also called a fall-away rest) physically moves out of the arrow’s path during the shot. The launcher arm drops — triggered by a cable or limb connection — before the fletching arrives. The result is that the fletchings have nothing to hit. For compound archers who want maximum consistency and plan to tune carefully, this is usually the most capable category.
A full-capture rest surrounds the arrow on three sides. The arrow cannot fall off even if you tilt the bow completely sideways. If you hunt from a treestand, glass your shot from an awkward position, or draw on moving animals, that security matters. The containment contact requires attention during tuning, but for hunting use the practical benefit usually outweighs that work.
A blade or launcher rest holds the arrow on a single spring arm or blade. It is the right category for recurve archers using a standard plunger-and-blade setup, and for traditional shooters. It is also the most forgiving to install and the least expensive to replace. If you are new to archery and shooting a recurve, this is probably where you start.
Compound target archers sometimes run a blade-style launcher, but the tuning window is narrower than a drop-away. Worth knowing before you commit.
Fletching clearance matters more than most beginners expect
Bad fletching clearance produces groups that look like a form problem. The arrow wobbles early in the shot, often never stabilizes the way it should, and you spend a lot of time questioning your release before you check the rest.
The physics are straightforward: the fletching arrives at the rest position a few milliseconds after the arrow begins moving. If anything is still in the way when that happens, the vanes deflect. On a fixed-position rest, the clearance window depends entirely on how the arrow is tuned relative to the rest — height, center-shot, arrow spine, and nock fit all play a role.
Drop-away rests reduce this problem significantly because the arm is moving down before the fletching gets there. That said, “drop-away” does not mean “no tuning needed.” The rest still needs to be positioned correctly, and the timing of the fall needs to be confirmed. Paper tuning or bare-shaft testing will show you where you stand.
If you are running aggressive helical fletching (more than about four degrees of offset), a full-capture design deserves more thought before you commit to it. Helicals need room to rotate through the shot, and containment designs vary in how much room they offer.
Tuning: what “micro-adjustable” actually means in practice
Every bow is slightly different. Draw length, cam timing, arrow spine, and arrow weight all interact. A rest with coarse adjustments — ones you make by loosening a set screw and sliding the arm by hand — makes it genuinely difficult to repeat a position you found and lost.
Micro-adjustability means small, repeatable movements, usually in both horizontal (windage) and vertical (elevation) directions. Some rests click in predictable increments. Others use fine-threaded screws. Either works if you can document where you are and return to it after changing something.
This matters most when you switch arrow weights or start shooting broadheads. Field points and broadheads rarely fly identically, and the solution is almost always a rest adjustment rather than a form correction. The easier and more precise that adjustment is, the less time you spend doing it.
If you plan to do your own bow tuning, prioritize adjustability. If you plan to bring the bow to a coach or a shop regularly, it matters less because someone else will be making those calls.
Hunting-specific considerations
The two things that go wrong with hunting rests are noise and arrow retention.
On noise: a rest that rattles or makes contact with the arrow during movement will eventually cost you a shot at an animal. Any plastic or metal component that touches the arrow should either be padded or by design silent. Check this before the season, not in the field. Run your hand over the arrow in the rest and feel whether anything makes contact under pressure.
On retention: full-capture rests hold the arrow by surrounding it. That is the whole point. If you are in a blind and shifting position, hanging from a harness, or picking your way through thick brush with an arrow nocked, you want that arrow to stay put without you thinking about it. Drop-aways generally do not provide this — the arm is in a resting position that supports the arrow but does not contain it the way a three-sided design does.
Some hunters run a drop-away with a fallback containment clip for exactly this reason. It is a workable hybrid if the geometry of your setup allows it.
When the simpler (or cheaper) option is the right call
A basic blade rest on a recurve is correct, full stop. There is no premium drop-away upgrade that makes sense for a recurve compound or a traditional bow. Do not buy complexity you do not need.
For a new compound archer who is still developing form, a mid-range full-capture rest is often the better starting point even if they plan to hunt. It is forgiving to set up, keeps the arrow where it belongs while they are learning, and does not demand the tuning investment that a drop-away does. The tuning conversation can happen later, once their form is consistent enough for that work to mean something.
For target archers who have shot the same setup for years and already know their arrow’s spine, a well-tuned drop-away will likely tighten groups at distance. That investment makes sense when everything else in the system is dialed in.
When to confirm with a coach or in person: if you are changing bow platforms (switching from a recurve to a compound, or moving to a longer draw length that changes your cam timing), have a coach or shop tech set up the rest with you. Rest position interacts with arrow spine selection, and changing one without checking the other is a common source of problems that look like form issues. The rest is cheap relative to the arrows you will burn chasing a tuning problem someone else could have spotted in ten minutes.
