How to Choose a Stabilizer
Match the stabilizer to how you shoot: hunting needs short, light, and quiet; target archery needs length, tunability, and a balance system.

- Length
- Longer bars put mass farther from the pivot point, which multiplies the stabilizing effect. Target archers typically run 20 to 36 inches on the front bar. Hunting setups run 4 to 12 inches, sometimes less. The bow has to fit through brush and swing onto a target quickly, so don't buy length you can't use in the field.
- Weight and tuning
- More weight means more inertia, but too much tires the bow arm and degrades form under fatigue. Most stabilizers accept threaded add-on weights so you can start light, shoot, and adjust incrementally. Remove weight just as readily as you add it. The right amount is whatever improves the shot without grinding down your endurance over a full session.
- Front bar vs. rear extender
- A single front bar shifts mass forward of the grip, which is enough for most hunting and beginning target setups. A rear extender adds counterbalancing weight behind the riser to level the bow at full draw and prevent sideways torque. Rear extenders are adjustable for angle, letting you chase whatever direction the bow is fighting you. Dialing this in takes range time, not just a workbench.

- Dampening comes from bar material density and flex, rubber or gel end dampeners, and overall system mass. For hunting, quieting the shot is often as important as steadying it. For target shooting, the priority is comfort and a cleaner sight picture through the shot. A short rod with a solid end dampener on a hunting bow makes a real difference compared to a bare riser.

Length: why it matters more than people expect
A stabilizer adds inertia to the bow so it holds steadier and resists torque from an imperfect grip. The longer the bar, the farther that mass sits from the pivot point, which multiplies the effect. That’s why you see target archers shooting bars that would never clear a ground blind.
For target archery, front bars in the 28-to-36-inch range are common at the competitive level. Shorter bars, say 20 to 24 inches, are a reasonable starting point and still provide real stabilization, especially if you add a rear extender with weight. For hunting, you’re usually looking at 4 to 12 inches, sometimes less. The bow has to fit through brush, swing onto a target quickly, and stay manageable when you’re climbing or carrying.
Don’t buy length you can’t use. A longer bar that catches on brush or throws off your treestand balance isn’t doing you any favors, even if the numbers look good on paper.
Weight: more isn’t always better
More weight on a stabilizer means more inertia; the bow doesn’t want to jump around during the shot. But there’s a ceiling. Too much weight tires your bow arm, changes your form under fatigue, and can feel unmanageable at the end of a long practice session or a full day afield.
Most stabilizers let you add or remove threaded weights at the end of the bar. Start lighter than you think you need. Shoot the bow and notice what it’s doing: forward-tipping at full draw, jumping left at the shot, vibrating more than you’d like. Then add weight and see if it helps. Removing weight is just as valid a move. Some archers find a heavier rear extension does more for their balance than stacking more weight on the front.
The right total weight is the one that improves your shot without grinding down your endurance. That number varies by person and by bow setup. No universal answer exists.
Front bar and rear extender: understanding the balance system
A single front bar shifts weight forward of the grip. That’s often enough for a hunting setup or a beginning target archer. As you move toward serious target work, a rear extender enters the picture.
The rear extender mounts to a second bushing on the riser, typically below and behind the grip, and lets you add weight behind the bow to counterbalance the front bar. You’re aiming for the bow to hold level or slightly muzzle-heavy at full draw, without torquing left or right. If your bow wants to tip forward heavily or dive sideways at the shot, the rear extender is where you address that.
Most rear extenders are adjustable for angle. You can tilt the bar up, down, left, or right to shift the weight toward wherever the bow is fighting you. Getting this dialed takes time at the range, not just reading about it. One change at a time, several ends before you touch anything again.
Vibration dampening
Stabilizers absorb the energy wave that runs through the riser at the shot. For hunting, quieting the shot is often as important as steadying it. For target shooting, it’s more about comfort and keeping the sight picture clean.
Dampening comes from the density and flex of the bar material itself, rubber or gel dampeners at the end or built into the bushing connection, and the mass of the system overall. More mass generally means more dampening. Stiffer carbon bars move vibration through quickly; an end dampener helps absorb what arrives there.

Quick-disconnects and tuning hardware
If you plan to switch between a long target bar and a shorter hunting configuration, quick-disconnect systems let you swap bars without threading and unthreading each time. The hardware threads into the riser once; the bar snaps on and off from there. Useful if you practice with a longer bar but want a compact setup for transport or a hunting season.
For target setups with a rear extender, the angle and weight of the rear bar adjust via a clamp-and-lock mechanism on the extender itself. Front bar weight comes off by threading weights off the end cap. Neither process is fast the first time. It becomes routine. Getting the torque check, balance angle, and bow-hand tension sorted at once usually takes a range session, not just a workbench.
When the cheaper option is the right call
A basic stabilizer on a new archer’s bow does a real job. The improvement from a premium bar is mostly about fine-tuning a shot that already has consistent form behind it.
If you’re new, or if you’re hunting and the bow is going to take knocks in the field, spending heavily on stabilization before you’ve settled your form or your gear setup is usually an easy way to waste money. Buy something that fits your use case, shoot it for a season or through a coaching cycle, and then upgrade based on what you actually notice. How long should a stabilizer be for target archery?
Front bars in the 20-to-36-inch range are common depending on your level and your bow setup. Competitive archers often run toward the longer end. Do I need a rear extender or is a front bar enough?
