Archery term

Broadhead

What does Broadhead mean?

A broadhead is a sharp hunting point with cutting blades, designed for hunting arrows. Broadheads may have fixed blades or blades that deploy on impact. They are different from field points, which are used for practice and target shooting. Match the broadhead to the shaft and use a target rated for it.

Why it matters

Use broadheads only where lawful and on a safe, suitable target. Match their weight to the arrow setup, check manufacturer guidance, and spin-test each assembled arrow to reveal a bent ferrule or poor fit. Broadheads are sharp: use a proper wrench or cover while handling them.

What to check

  • Match broadhead type, mass, and thread to the shaft, insert, and bow setup.
  • Follow local hunting rules and the broadhead maker’s instructions.
  • Use only a target rated for the head; keep sharp blades covered during handling.
