Archery term

Brace Height

What does Brace Height mean?

Brace height is the distance from the bow's grip pivot point to the string while the bow is strung and at rest. The maker specifies how to measure it and gives a suitable range for each bow model. A bow square helps measure the distance; the correct value is model-specific.

Why it matters

Changing brace height can alter how the bow feels and how the arrow leaves it, but there is no universal setting that is best for every bow. Check the bow manual before twisting a string or changing equipment, then use a tuning procedure appropriate to that bow.

What to check

  • Use the bow maker’s measurement points and range for the exact model.
  • A bow square can measure brace height; record the current value before changing string setup.
  • Do not twist a string to chase a universal number.
