Waders manage wet conditions and keep you dry. They are not a flotation device, and treating them like one is a real risk in moving or deep water.

Boot or wader fit

Boot or wader fit affects footing on uneven or slick bottoms; a poor fit changes how confidently you can move in the water.

Seam sealing and condition

Seams are the water-entry points on any wader. Check seam sealing and condition before conditions get demanding, not after you’re already wet.

Insulating layers and water temperature

Layers underneath should match water temperature. Breathable waders generally need insulating layers added beneath them; neoprene or insulated waders add warmth on their own but still call for clothing suited to how cold the water actually is.

Flotation and a PFD

Do not rely on waders for flotation. Use a PFD where conditions call for one — deep or moving water is exactly that situation.
