A decoy that doesn’t move right reads as fake fast

Species and posture

Species and posture shape the message the decoy sends; an aggressive posture on the wrong species or season can provoke the wrong reaction.

Motion stake or mount

Motion needs a stable stake or mount that lets the decoy move the way that species actually moves, in the wind and setup you’ve actually got. If wind or terrain is pushing it into jerky, unnatural motion, disable the moving parts or reposition it rather than let it spook the animal you’re trying to draw in.

Placement wind and approach

Placement has to account for wind and the animal’s likely approach; scent and sightline both matter more than how visible the decoy is to you.

Game safety and retrieval

Keep decoys clearly distinguishable from live game, both for safety around other hunters and for your own approach and retrieval.
