Archery term
Range
What does Range mean?
An archery range is a designated area with a shooting line, targets, a safe direction of fire, and procedures for when archers may shoot or retrieve arrows. Target, field, and 3D ranges arrange shooting positions differently. Follow the posted commands and retrieve only when the line is clear.

Why it matters
Learn the range’s commands and safety boundaries before nocking an arrow. Shoot only when the line is clear and the range is open; retrieve arrows only after the signal. Competition distances and target layouts vary by discipline, age class, and local rules.
What to check
- Read posted range rules and learn the shooting and retrieval signals before nocking an arrow.
- Use the designated line and safe direction of fire.
- Never retrieve arrows until the line is declared clear.
